The
purpose of the California Young Reader Medal program is to:

Promote
recreational reading |
|

Honor
favorite books and authors/illustrators |
The
award is given each year in five categories:

Primary
(K-2nd grade) |
|
*
|
Intermediate
(3rd -5th grade) |
|
*
|
Middle
School/Junior High (6th -8th grade) |
|
*
|
Young
Adult (9th -12th grade) |
|
*
|
Picture
Books for Older Readers (All Ages) |
|
The
winning book in each category is determined by the vote of
young readers in California.
Readers may participate in more than one category. Each reader
is entitled to ONE vote in each category as long as the reader
has read all nominated titles in the category.
The
award is a bronze medal depicting a relief map of California
and a child reading. Medals are presented at the annual conferences
of CATE, CLA, CRA, and CSLA.

Recommendation
Requirements
Titles submitted for nomination by teachers, librarians, or parents
reflect the preferences of young readers. To be eligible for nomination,
a book must:

Have
strong appeal for the age group for which the recommendation
is made. |
|
*
|
Be
among titles most often read or requested by children and young
adults. |
|
*
|
Have
been published within the previous four years and still be in
print. |
|
*
|
Be
written by an author who is still living. |
|
*
|
Be
an original work of fiction available in the English language. |

Reproducible Promotional Materials or by visiting the CYRM web site
at http://www.californiayoungreadermedal.org
Nominations
are due by April 1 of each year.
The
California Young Reader Medal Committee considers all titles recommended
in each category and verifies that books meet the above criteria.
